  7. Where can I park my car when visiting the Library or Museum?
  8. Parking is available in the Museum Parking Garage, located on the corner of Sixth and Madison Streets. The rate is $.75 cents per 1/2 hour or $1.50 per hour. Hours: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily except.
  9. What is the admission fee?
  10. The Library has no admission charge. The Museum's admission fee is:
    Adult (16 - 61 years of age) $10.00
    Senior (62 years of age and up) $7.00
    Children (5 - 15 years of age) $4.00
    Military (id required) $7.00
    Students (school/college id required) $7.00
    Child (under 5 are free) No Charge


    Ticket price includes admission to the exhibit areas and both theater presentations.

  13. How can I book a getaway package?

  15. Are there special rates for groups?
  16. The admission fee can be waived for school groups holding a valid reservation made through the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau (217) 789-2360. Discounts are available for college students and seniors.
  17. Do special tours for groups need to reserve time in advance? If so, who is the contact?
  18. Yes, all group visits of 15 or more must be scheduled through the Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau (SCVB). The SCVB is available by telephone at 217-789-2360.
  19. When is the best time to schedule a visit?
  20. If you want to avoid possible lines at the ticket counter, the Journeys or theaters, schedule your visit on Sundays, or from mid-November through the first of March.
  21. How long are the presentations in the two theaters?
  22. The multi-screen, multi-stage special effects theater presentation, "Lincoln's Eyes" runs approximately 17 minutes and tells Lincoln's story through the eyes of an artist painting Lincoln's portrait. The Holavision® Theatre's "Ghosts of the Library" presentation is approximately 15 minutes and answers the questions: "Why does history matter? Why we save all that old stuff?" (Strobe lighting and loud noises are associated with union theater)
  23. Are the theaters ADA compliant?
  24. Each theater is equipped with ADA devices for both the hearing and visually impaired. Our enhanced audio devise boost the show's soundtrack, while the visual device provides an audio narration of the show's action. Also available for the deaf are readers boards which provide closed caption.
  25. When are the theater shows presented?
  26. Typically both theater presentations show twice an hour. Check the posted show schedule at each theater upon arrival to assist in planning your visit.
  27. For what languages are the show scripts translated?
  28. For both theater presentations we offer translated scripts in French, Russian, Spanish and Chinese. To request a copy at the Museum — locate a staff member outside the theater to assist you.
  29. What is the minimum age my child should be before they should visit the Museum?
  30. The museum and its exhibits are designed for students in the 4th grade and up. Some of the exhibits and theater presentations may be disturbing for younger children.
  31. Is there something at the Museum for younger children?
  32. Mrs. Lincoln's Attic is a hands-on play area for children ages 3-12 and their families. School students with their chaperone are welcome but, once maximum capacity is reached, entrance will be stopped with preference given to visiting families.
  33. How extensive are the Museum's permanent exhibits?
  34. The permanent exhibit is comprised of two "Journeys", two Theaters, a Treasures Gallery, Mrs. Lincoln's Attic and Ask Mr. Lincoln totaling more than 40,000 sq ft of state-of —the-art exhibitory.

  37. Why does the Museum feel cooler sometimes throughout the year?
  38. To properly conserve our artifacts and other objects on display the temperature at the Museum must be maintained at 70 degrees. This makes the Museum feel a little cooler during the summer months.
  39. Where is photography allowed in the Museum?
  40. Photography is only allowed in the Gateway, Plaza and Mrs. Lincoln's Attic in the Museum
  41. Can educators get in free to the Museum?
  42. Yes. Educators may download a complimentary educator pass from our web site at http://www.alplm.org/education/Online_Educator_Pass.pdf to use in preparation for an upcoming school trip. Passes cannot be used on the date of a scheduled school tour and must be accompanied by a valid teacher identification card or a letter from a school administrator on school letterhead.
  43. Are wheelchairs/strollers available at the Museum?
  44. Yes, complimentary wheelchairs, strollers, and coat check are available. You can request these services at the will-call desk.
  45. Is food service available in the Museum?
  46. Yes, Augie's Café offers a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, salads, soups, deserts and beverages. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Wednesday.
  47. Is there an outdoor location nearby for picnics, etc?
  48. Yes, conveniently located across from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum is Union Square Park. Picnic tables are available on a first-come first-serve basis.
  49. Do you have a Museum Store?
  50. Yes, the Museum Store has thousands of items for sale. Among the more popular items are books, souvenirs, apparel, and toys.
  51. How much time should I plan for my visit?
  52. It is suggested to allow 2 ½ to 3 hours for your visit.
  53. Are guided tours of the Museum available?
  54. No, the Museum is designed to be a self-guided experience.
  55. What kind of library is the Presidential Library?
  56. The Presidential Library is a research library, not a public library. Researchers should check in at the front desk for direction to appropriate departments.
  57. Do individuals receive a library card?
  58. No. A library card is not needed as materials cannot be checked out like at traditional libraries. ALPL money cards are available to researchers who desire to use copying or printing services.
  59. Does the Presidential Library have books other than books about Lincoln?
  60. The Presidential Library is a public, non-circulating research library, specializing in Abraham Lincoln and all of Illinois history. Collections include books, pamphlets, maps, and periodicals; photographs, films, tapes, and broadsides; manuscripts; and Illinois newspapers on microfilm. The library contains extensive resources on the Civil War and many publications useful for genealogical research, as well as the renowned Henry Horner Lincoln collection.

  69. What kind of events take place in Union Square Park?
  70. Union Square Park, directly across the street from the museum, has been the location of many free events and performances, including the 33rd Illinois Vol. Regiment Band and the 10th Illinois Vol. Cavalry Regiment Band (both Civil War re-enactment groups); Mary Lincoln’s Strawberry Party (a summertime family event); July 4th celebration, New Century Orchestra, Springfield International Folk Dancers, and many more musical performances throughout the year. The musical The Civil War will be performed in the park July 24-27, 2008.
  71. Is the Presidential Library and Museum near other Lincoln sites? Which ones?
  72. Yes. The ALPLM is near several other historic sites: the Old State Capitol, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices and Lincoln's Home are just blocks away. The Dana — Thomas House, Vachel Lindsay Home, Governors' Mansion and the State Capitol are all within walking distance.
  73. Are maps available to find one's way around all the Lincoln sites?
  74. Yes. The newly opened Union Station Visitor Center, located in Springfield, has begun delivering information to visitors that reflect not only Springfield area historic sites and events but Illinois tourism as a whole. Union Station Visitor Center is strategically located across from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Another service available at the center includes on-site booking of hotel accommodations and special event packages that are scheduled across the state of Illinois (217) 557-4588.

  83. How can I volunteer at the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum?
  84. Our wonderful volunteer corps performs a variety of key functions for the Museum and Library. Each volunteer works a minimum of eight hours a month; must participate in an initial orientation and training period; and helps the public while enjoying fantastic opportunities for personal growth through continuing education and experiences.
